I recently visited Bolivia, where farmers are planting large quantities of pine and eucalyptus at high altitudes to meet their timber and fuel wood needs.  There are native species such as quewina that were traditionally used in these areas for fuel wood, but they are slow growing, so farmers are choosing pine and eucalyptus.  Attached is a 3 page article about agroforestry in the high Andes in Peru.  Do you have any experience working with agroforestry systems above 3,000 meters?

Hi, we work with a variety of Tree Projects, but our focus is on the Paulownia Tree, also called the Empress, Kiri, Princess, and Dragon Tree.  Some of the genetics that have been worked on over the past few years are designed for growing at higher altitudes.

Paulownia are fast growing broadleaf deciduous trees Hardwood Tree on the planet; it grows slower at higher altitudes but still remains the most optimum individual tree for long terms lumber needs.  It
is a truly miraculous solution for beauty, cleaning air, sustainable agro-forestry for wood needs, phyto-remediation, reclaiming surfaced mined-lands, and decreasing pressure on indigenous forests.  Read more about the amazing benefits of the Paulownia tree in the attached doc, and the Paulownia Reforestation Project plan for it's use by clicking here.

PeacePortal had posted an attachment for Paulownia, but the file was too large, so we had to remove it from the site.  If you would like more information on Paulownia, please contact PeacePortal to get a copy.  Or if PeacePortal reads this post, perhaps s/he can submit a link to the attachment so people can view it on the Internet.
